Podcast Description: United lose Benzema race - Ronaldo deal rubber-stamped - Welsh ace signs new Gunners deal - Season starts for UK quartet
Manchester United have lost out in the race to sign Lyon striker Karim Benzema. The French international looks set to join Real Madrid in a £35million deal. Cristiano Ronaldo’s officially completed his £80million world record transfer from Manchester United to Real Madrid. He’s likely to earn around £11million a year. Welsh international midfielder Aaron Ramsey has signed a new long-term contract with Arsenal. The 18-year-old made 22 appearances for the Gunners last season after his £5million move from Cardiff City. The football season begins today for Motherwell, Llanelli, The New Saints and Linfield, with all four teams involved in the first round of qualifying for the Europa League. Motherwell and Llanelli play each other at Fir Park, the New Saints visit Icelandic side Fram, while Northern Ireland side Linfield go to Danish outfit Randers. Blackburn Rovers boss Sam Allardyce has ruled out a move for Michael Owen. The England striker is a free agent after his release by Newcastle, but Allardyce says he can’t afford to gamble on a player with Owen’s injury record. And Portsmouth have released five players. Lauren, Noe Pamarot, Glen Little, Djimi Traore and Jerome Thomas have all been shown the door.
