1. What are my duties?
▪ Lesson preparation, curriculum design, possibly teaching/tutoring your Korean co-workers; Making tests; etc., for the remainder of the time ("teacher stuff", just like back home) 2. How many students are there in each class? There are usually 35-40 students per class. 3. What are my working hours? How long are the classes? ▪ It is one year contract ▪ Work hours are Monday to Friday, eight (8) hours per day (your exact daily schedule may vary from school to school and term to term - Most classes are 45 - 50 minutes long 4. Are there teaching resources available? Yes, institutes are well-resourced. You may also like to take photos and pictures of your home country, family and friends. 5. Will I be teaching alone or in a team? You will mostly be teaching alone, but you will have the guidance and support of other teachers and your supervisor. 6. What kind of school will I be teaching at? You will be teaching at a public schools.
Elementary, Middle or High Schools 7. Will I get Settlement pay? You will be paid KRW 300,000 (approx. £150, first year only), upon completion of your rientation training 8. What will my accommodation be like? Furnished housing is provided as a part of your remuneration, and is arranged by the school. There area three housing options: 1. A leased house/apartment whose deposit is no more than KRW 30,000,000 (if you don't know bout Korean housing; Google “chunsae” or “cheonsae” and read all about it) 2. A rented house or apartment or Studio Flat 3. If a teacher already has his or her own housing (or in the rare case that housing cannot be arranged by the school) a monthly rent subsidy of KRW 400,000 will be provided ▪ Furnishings will consist of a bed, a microwave, a refrigerator, a gas stove, a kitchen table and chairs, a home phone, a wardrobe, a washing machine, and a television, blankets, bowls, cups, utensils, etc. (total aggregate value of KRW 2,000,000) ▪ Maintenance fees, utilities (gas, electricity, water), and other monthly expenses are the responsibility of the teacher
9. Is my Round Trip Airfare covered?
▪ Airfare: your airfare coming from your home country will be reimburse as soon as you arrive in orea and return airfare is provided upon completion of the contract ▪ Renewal airfare: teachers that re-sign for a second year have their round-trip “home leave” irfare paid for by the school 10. How much will I be paid? You will be paid in Won into your local bank account (you will be assisted in setting this up on arrival.) The tax rate is 3.3%. The cost of living is approximately £450 per month (please note that this is a guide only).
Your monthly salary will depend on your qualification 1. Lvl. 1 Teacher : 2.3M Won (approx. £1,150) Have two years of full-time teaching experience at accredited institutions AND (A) a Teacher's Certificate for elementary or secondary school; or (B) a TESOL/TEFL certificate (min. 100 hrs.); or (C) a Master's degree 2. Lvl. 2 Teacher : 2.1M Won (approx. £1,050) Have (A) a Teacher's certificate for elementary or secondary School; or (B) a TESOL/TEFL certificate (min. 100 hrs.); or (C) a Master's degree; or (D) a Bachelor's degree with at least one year of teaching experience at accredited institution 3. Lvl. 3 Teacher : 2.0M Won (approx. £1,000) Have a Bachelor's degree, but no experience or certification as outlined above 4. Internship: 1.6M - 1.8M Won (approx. £800 - £900) HND or 2 years of a Bachelor's degree A rural allowance of KRW 100,000 (approx. £50) per month is provided to those who teach n rural/remote areas 11. Do I receive a bonus? You will also receive a bonus equivalent to one month's salary on successful completion of the 12 month contract. 12. How many days of holiday will I receive per year? Paid holidays: seven days per semester (total 20 days), plus all National Holidays Unpaid holidays: teachers that re-sign after completion of their first contract receive a 14-day unpaid “home leave” between contracts Special paid leave: for your marriage (7 days), or a death in the family (5-7 days) Sick leave: with the approval of your employer, paid sick leave can be arranged under special circumstances if both notice and approval occur before the beginning of such leave and a medical diagnosis justifying such leave is submitted
13. Is there any deduction from my monthly salary? Income Tax: tax deductions will be made in accordance with Korean law; you can expect your ncome tax rate to be 3.3% (the tax rate is tied to one’s income level; citizens from certain countries ay exempt it's income tax if the person submit it's relevant documentation such as resident ertification or certification (prove) of tax payments in their home countries)
Pension Fund: you must pay into Korea’s national pension fund: 10% of your salary per month your contribution is 5% and your employer matches that with another 5%; citizens from ertain countries may reclaim this pension payment at the end of their contract—currently only mericans and Canadians; South Africa Citizen is not required to pay it's pension funds)
Medical/Health Insurance: Medical/Health insurance must pay 5% of it's salary per month (your contribution is 2.24% and your employer matches that with another 2.24%)
14. Can I renew my contract? Your contract may be extendable; you would need to discuss this with your school. 15. What happens if I need to break my contract? As the work visa has been applied for by the school, to break the contract would directly cause your stay to be illegal. You would lose your bonus and any other related payments.
