Fabio Capello says if England qualify for the World Cup finals he could set up their training camp in Austria. England would then travel to South Africa a week before the tournament – Capello is thought to be concerned about the effects of high altitude on his players.

England’s bid to host the 2018 World Cup has been given a major boost by a footballing legend from Germany. Franz Beckenbauer is on the Fifa committee that will decide who hosts the 2018 and 2022 tournaments. He says the stadiums and fans in the country mean England could host the tournament tomorrow if needed.

England skipper John Terry says he has no interest in leaving Chelsea, despite rumours of yet another bid from Manchester City. City have already failed with two offers for the defender – it’s thought they’re considering Barcelona’s Carles Puyol as an alternative.

Wales defender Danny Gabbidon admits he feared he’d never play again during an 18-month spell on the sidelines. He returns to pre-season training with West Ham today after career-saving abdominal surgery.

And Cristiano Ronaldo insists the world record fee of £80million that took him from Manchester United to Real Madrid is a fair price. He’ll be presented to the Real fans today, and says he’ll justify the amount the Spanish giants have splashed out.
